Spanning decades and world cultures, Roving Soul blends traditional and modern folksongs that speak the common language of the human experience. Their unique form of composed, reinterpreted and improvised music is multi-ethnic, imaginative, and playful.

Jerry Sabatini plays trumpet and flugelhorn and has led and co-led many original modern jazz projects in the Boston area for over 20 years. In 1995 as a leader and composer he founded Sonic Explorers (a multi-horn instrumental jazz and world music ensemble featuring his compositions and arrangements). Sonic Explorers have released four independent CDs and continue to perform and record. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and has studied jazz improvisation, theory and arranging at SUNY at Buffalo as well as improvisation and composition for many years with internationally renowned jazz tenor saxophonist, Jerry Bergonzi. In addition, Mr. Sabatini is enrolled at New England Conservatory and will complete his MM degree in 2009. He also teaches trumpet, jazz improvisation and theory at the Joy of Music Program in Worcester, MA and conducts jazz clinics and brass workshops at New England area schools. His compositions have been commissioned and performed by many educational institutions throughout New England. Most recently in 2007 the Massachusetts Cultural Commission chose Jerry as a finalist in Music Composition.

Saxophonist Chris Veilleux earned his bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from Northern Illinois University.  While living in the Chicago land area, he performed with many professional groups such as the Glenn Miller Orchestra, The John Bernett Orchestra, Chicago’s leading salsa merengue band “Banda Rika” and several times with the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra.  Chris is also a recipient of Downbeat magazine’s 26th annual student music award under the category of Best College Chamber Music Group for a classical saxophone quartet recording.  Chris now resides in Boston and is working on several of his own creative music projects such as Industrious Noise, along with several different improvisational duo settings with bassoonist Dana Jessen and soprano saxophonist Dan Blake.  He is also a sideman in other creative music groups such as Charlie Kohlhase’s Saxophone Support Group, and Jerry Sabatini’s Sonic Explorers.  Chris is currently enrolled at the New England Conservatory and is part way through his Masters degree in Creative Improvisation (Third Stream).  His teachers have included Steve Duke, Joey Sellers, Jerry Bergonzi, Anthony Coleman, Allan Chase and Ran Blake.

Greg Loughman obtained a Bachelor of Music in the field of jazz studies at Capital University, where he studied electric and upright bass with Doug Richeson (bassist for a number of years with Tony Bennet), Jeff Ciampa, and Lou Fisher. While in college, he worked his way into the Columbus, OH jazz scene. Upon graduation, he quickly rose to a prominent position as one of the top freelance jazz bassists in the Midwest.  After spending a year in Montana, Greg moved to Boston, where he continues to pursue an active schedule of performing and recording.  He has performed with musicians including Curtis Fuller, JoAnne Brackeen, Mark Murphy, Sheila Jordan, Judi Silvano, Kenwood Dennard, Greg Abate, Ray Santisi, Al Vega, Grammy-nominated pianist Phillip Aaberg, guitarist Mimi Fox, Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Carlos Malta, jazz violinist Christian Howes, singer Patti Page, actor/singer James Naughton, and the Jimmy Dorsey Big Band, among many others. His musical career has taken him on tours of Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Czech Republic, and Japan. Greg is also a faculty member at the University of Maine in Augusta and Bowdoin College, where he teaches private bass lessons.
